Couples and Marriage Counseling

As a Licensed therapist with over 25 years experience as a marriage and family counselor, as well as having a training certificate from Eastern Virginia Medical School in family Therapy, I understand that the decision to start couples counseling is a difficult one.  it is usually a time of crises and struggle.

Maybe you have lost the sense of intimacy that once brought you together, or are going through a sexual disconnect, an  unhappy relationship will have an impact on every area of your life. However, it can also be a time of positive change.

Many couples make the mistake of waiting to the Point when they are about to or have already seperated.   Our licensed counselors are here to guide you and give you a sense of hope.  Whether you have experienced a recent life stress or have long standing conflicts, we will help to get you unstuck. our office tries to ease people in to get started by explaining insurance, other payment methods and accommodating schedules.

The goal of counseling here is to help couples identify their underlying causes of conflict and to learn more effective ways to communicate.  Just about every couple identifies communication problems as the most challenging part of their relationship. This involves understanding the patterns which I call marital loops which leave individuals in the same stressful place repeatedly.

Your therapist will also encourage you to sort out past family issues which may affect present relatioships.  A therapist will try to get to know each individual in the relationship and if needed will refer you for individual counseling or a medication evaluation.

It is  common for one or both parties to have an underlying diagnoses of depression or anxiety which is at the root of some of their problems.  Couples Therapy can be hard work, but the rewards can be significant.  Do not wait until it is too late.  Take the step to get help.

When your relationship improves, every part of your life will feel better.
